Discussion will include best practices, worst practices, research and future trends in mobile and game based learning.

11:00-11:30 AM Hackathon: Hack Your Class
What is a Hackathon? It’s an intensive 24-48 hour event where programmers, graphic designers, techies and geeks gather to figure out tech solutions to problems big and small. See how to bring this kind of energy and event to your classroom. Using a hackathon as a model, the educators presenting created a 24 hour, 12 hour and 8 hour hackathon. They will present on how to plan and execute your own hackathon. The students as players on a team are given a challenge and challenge rules. It brings the experience of coding and design to life for students. The difference between a hackathon and other multimedia forms is that the students are creating, editing and repurposing code as a pedagogical tool. The students are actively engaged in the experience. We have found it works equally as well as end of term class project or mid-way in the term as a way for students to bond.

Table 4: Machinima and the Metagame
If your students aren’t playing games on their computers and phones, chances are they are watching videos made in games. Ask any fifth grader their favorite video and they are likely to show you a Minecraft LP or “Let’s Play” type of video. These videos that are made in a game or in a virtual world are called Machinima. Machinima is an inexpensive and fast way to produce video. Games provide a ready-made 3D world to work with and players provide actors. Machinima is one of the great example of the Metagame or the what happens outside of the game. Your guides on the side can also talk to you about discussion forums, add-ons, guild site, fan fiction and everything else that your students are creating relating to games.

Lee Sheldon suggests “Teacher as Games Master” in the Multiplayer Classroom and Jesse Schell mentioned it twice at the Games 4 Learning Summit in April. In the #Metagame Book Club we explored what that means. This session will take highlight the role and function of Dungeon Master in D & D, Game Masters in LARPs and Puppetmasters in ARGs to explain how you can bring these into your classroom.
